About
Hi, I'm James, welcome!
I ask myself a lot of questions and try to think deeply about the answers.
Right now one of those questions is AI. It's completely changed the way we work, has opened up so many new possibilities, but also completely shaken up what we consider valuable for a human to contribute to the world. I'm trying to find how AI fits into my work without subtracting from it in other ways. You can read more about my stance on AI in my AI policy here, but from June 2026 onwards, everything is completely human-generated.
I think a lot about how to enact change in my life. I'm curious about psychology, philosophy both academic and experiential. I challenge myself, push myself to grow and generally try to be a better person.
I also spend a lot of time writing, and some of that writing ends up here. I've tried sticking to a strict publishing schedule in the past but I'm not a fan of the deadlines and obligation. That's not what I got into this for. I generally share my thoughts only when I have something to say.
My background in mathematics has informed the lens through which I analyse my life and ideas. I try to think rationally, logically, and find it useful to define frameworks to describe things I observe. I think in terms of systems and try to generalise ideas to see how far they might extend.
This blog is my life's work. Well, perhaps not yet, but I hope some day I'll feel as though I can call it that. Who knows what it'll look like in 50 years time. Maybe it won't even be a blog anymore. It might be some other format or medium that our puny early 21st century brains can't even conceive of yet. I don't think the substrate is the important part. For me the defining characteristic of this work is that it's a collection of my thoughts, ideas, stories, and projects, all in one place.
I share my work in various places across the web. Many of my essays and technical projects are also shared on Medium, and I may well, in the future, post content to other platforms too. But platforms come and go, algorithms determine your reach, and trends ebb and flow over time. This site is the permanent, canonical home for all of my content. Everything of mine that graces the internet will appear here in this feed.
I'm so glad you found me, but if you leave now, you might never find me again.
If you want to read more about where I'm at right now and what I'm working on, I have a now page. Thanks Derek Sivers for the exceptional idea.
I won't bore you with my professional life. I've got a whole portfolio for that!
